Let us tell you the story of 2 brave Vietnamese twin "Trung sisters" who fought for Vietam's independence 2000 years ago.
Trung Trac and Trung Nhi were twin daughters of a chief officer in a military family. Both sisters excelled in literature and martial arts, and both were in line to inherit their father’s land and titles.
Trung Trac got married to Thi Sach who was the son of a nearby prefect in an arranged marriage. They were deeply in love. Meanwhile, it was also a time when the Chinese Han dynasty enforced the policy of forcible cultural assimilation onto the Vietnamese population, Thi Sach made a stand against the Chinese and was executed. His death spurred his wife to take up his cause and the flames of insurrection spread.
In the summer of AD 40, Trung Trac and her sister rebelled with the support of many citizens and prefects. Starting from Hat Mon River in north Vietnam, they conquered Me Linh then took the capital "Co Loa" and went across the Duong River to conquer the headquarter of the Han Chinese. The invaders were so terrified that they fled to China. Trung Trac was able to take over 65 cities and declare herself Queen and her sister Princess.
But the peace didn’t last long. One year later, in the spring of AD 41, the Han Chinese readied ten thousand of their best soldiers to invade again. The Trung Sisters prepared wagons and boats, repaired the bridges and the roads, stored food supplies, and prepared the army for the next aggression.
In their last year of ruling, in the summer of AD 43, the Trung Queen took her army to fight but then realised that the enemy was too strong and outnumbered the Vietnamese soldiers in great amounts.
According to one legendary account, when finally overwhelmed by the Han Chinese armies, the sisters threw themselves into the Hat Giang River in order to avoid capture. They then turned into statues. These eventually washed ashore and were placed in Hanoi’s Hai Ba Trung Temple for worship.
Even though the Trung Sisters' revolt against the Chinese was almost 2000 years ago, its legacy in Vietnam remains. The two sisters are considered to be national icons for being the first two women to lead a rebellion in history.
